As we begin this study together, I want to remind you of a couple of important facts.  Throughout the Bible figurative language is used to describe real events.  We too use figurative language; for example, “as quick as a cat”.   In the Old Testament we see many references to locust.  Peoples of the Old Testament understood the total devastation that a swarm of locust brought.  In an area where vegetation was hard to come by, a swarm of locust was not just a nuisance.  When the prophets foretold of an army moving across the land like locust everyone understood that this meant absolute destruction, leaving nothing behind.  If we remember this it will help as we go forward in our study.  The consequences of the “locust” are no less serve, regardless of what they may or may not be.

The very first verse of Revelation makes it clear from whom the revelation comes and its purpose.  Chapter 1 goes to extremes to drive home that this is a unified message from the Godhead, through Jesus to His servants.  This is a message for the church.

How can one possible summarize such a complex and mysterious book?  A book that has been studied by the most note Bible scholars throughout history.  I will look at its purpose, its harmony within the body of Scripture, the lessons it teaches, the series of events it portrays, and the tasks it gives us.
